What Writers Want!

Posted in The Biz on November 27th, 2007 by Phil Abatecola

For all of you who don’t really know or understand why us writers have put the industry in gridlock, here is a small video to explain it! And if a picture is worth a thousand words, at 30 frames per second… what is that?

Hmmm… I think you’re getting around 6.5 million words here in just three and a half minutes! Oh, where were you You Tube when I was in high school?

In any case, I think that this video gets to the heart of the matter and makes clear the simple, yet palpable problem the writers are facing and will face for decades if the deals remain sour.

Enjoy!

Stormy Times and Machines

Posted in The Biz, Time Machine on November 20th, 2007 by Phil Abatecola

Franco and PhilThe world can be cruel and simultaneously rewarding. A thief and an altruist. A friend and an enemy.

Such is the way my life is folding around me. Aside from some turbulent life experiences, the all encompassing pressure to outperform my peers has been crushing and giving way to promise.

My stage play, H.G. Wells: Time Machine is moving forward very fast now. For me, the past couple of days have held some rewarding and encouraging casting sessions. I believe we have found 90% of our cast. I’m very excited about who will be leading this play to fruition, because to be frank, the cast is going to be very strong.

On top of that, I might be making my stage debut, performing with my actors as well as directing. It was a spur of the moment thing, but I figured it would be fun if I can find the resources to commit. You’ll have to look very closely for me though. I’ll be in some serious makeup. No, I don’t mean rosy cheeks and powder. I mean fangs, leather and some kick ass albino makeup!

Did I mention that it’ll be kick ass?

The play should be opening January 25th, 2008 and running for six consecutive weeks. Perhaps more if you all make the run successful enough.

Stay tuned for some more news and spread the word.

Manifesto

Posted in The Biz on November 10th, 2007 by Phil Abatecola

I don’t have an office. That being the case, I have to travel to various locations in order to do my writing. It was during one of these trips to my office (coffee shop) when I saw a couple of people who were heavily into a discussion about a project that seemed like it was on its way to either beginning or completion, so naturally, I was eavesdropping. In any case, I eventually introduced myself and inquired about the project they were pursuing. That project happened to be their brainchild, Manifesto Television.

Started by Scott Ryan and Charmel Green, Manifesto is a television concept about positive social change through user submitted content. A pilot has been completed and I’ve watched the promo myself. It’s very cool. A feature version of this documentary concept is in the works now and I can’t wait to see where this idea goes. From what I can tell, they’ve got what it takes to make a good idea, great. I like the message, style and I believe that more of this kind of action is needed. More people need to be bringing social issues to the forefront for sure, but what we really need are positive ways in changing the social fabric of our lives. That’s what Manifesto Television is all about.

The motto is, “if you don’t have a manifesto, get one!”

Now all we have to do is convince television executives that it’ll make good TV!

I wonder what my manifesto is?
