Two Hands, One Feature, Five Shows

Posted in Reality TV, The Biz, Writing on December 3rd, 2009 by Phil Abatecola

If there’s one thing I love more than developing one show… it’s developing FIVE.

After partnering with 1080 Inc. to develop and pitch National Geographic my Reality TV concept, Burnout: The Need for Speed in 2009, it looks like 2010 is going to be packed with even more opportunities.

1080 Inc. and I have inked a new deal this week to develop a slate of five new science and reality shows for the new calendar year.  We’ll be hitting several networks once the packaging materials are complete and the last show outline has been finalized.  Keep your fingers crossed.

On the feature narrative front, my producer Elizabeth Ai and I have put together a table read with a full cast of very talented and trusted actors this weekend to pave the way for a thoroughly polished script of A Shadow in the Dark.  soon, it’ll finally be fit to send to potential above the line attachments.  Budgets and schedules have been completed by my talented line producer, Shadie Elnashai, and I’m excited to be taking this next dive out into the world of sharks.

Global Warming…

I’ve been doing mountains of research lately on the issue of global warming due to the upcoming Copenhagen treaty that we as a country are being asked to participate in.  I was wondering what all the hoopla was about.  People seemed to be really upset about this treaty.  I mean, we all know that we’ve got to stop polluting our atmosphere to stop global warming and this treaty is the answer. Or is it?

We’ve all seen An Inconvenient Truth.  It is an unbelievable example in the power of filmmaking and has reshaped the debate over our environment, of which I believe needs to be protected.  I was impressed and thought, something needs to be done about this impending environmental catastrophe.  Or does it? Little Pieces Submitted to Sundance

Posted in Family Grief, Little Pieces, The Biz on September 28th, 2009 by Phil Abatecola

After some delay, Little Pieces, my short documentary about my family, has been submitted to the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.  It’s only a rough cut, but let’s hope that there’s something there that resonates with the judges.

Why?  Because daddy needs a new pair of ski boots!

I should find out whether or not the film is accepted sometime in December with also the possibility of acceptance into AFI Fest in October.  We’ll see.

Show Optioned!

Burnout2Just recently, 1080 Inc., optioned my racing show concept, Burnout.

Moving through their development pipeline as we speak, the show has gone to Discovery Networks for possible production.  Responsible for the incredible visual effects of the History Channel’s hit show Life After People, 1080 has proven to be able to create some very exciting content and I’m happy to be working with such creative individuals.

In the meantime, Big Brother 11 continues as does the writing.

Powers of Ten

Posted in The Biz on July 2nd, 2009 by Phil Abatecola

Produced in 1977 b y Charles and Ray Eames, I believe it is one of the most important and profound films ever made.  In under 9 minutes, Powers of Ten takes us on a tour through the universe. From the furthest limits of our visible universe to the deepest reaches of an atom, we get to see it all.

Certainly in the 30 years since, we have discovered much more information regarding both , but this nonetheless shines a powerful light on scale and our understanding of the known universe.

Bear witness, and be amazed…
